SONG IN THE MIND (introduction to arduino)

17/02/2016 - 26/02/2016

This  brief focused on skill development with a artefact as a final deliverable. Through workshops I developed a rich interest in prototyping interactions using the Arduino platform. Taking the goal of the interaction designer is to shape our everyday lives through the design of digital artefacts  for work, play and entertainment. Ultimately interaction designers strive to create meaningful relationships between people and products.

With these thoughts in mind, I developed a interactive instrument which, through an LCR sensor, was able to respond to the physical presence of a human. ‘A Song in the Mind’ was a jukebox that rather then emitting a recognisable melody the guitar string, plectrum and sound-hole acted like a button which changed the lyrics on the LCD screen. Thus it was the silence and the recognisable lyric that activated a melody in the mind of the human. I was playing with the perception of external sound and internal sound. All interaction happens inside the instrument, only activated by the presence of the human altering the light falling on the LCR sensor. Keep to the internal, once the human reads the recognisable lyrics a melody plays within the mind. The lyrics that played were David Bowie’s ‘Sound and Vision’, a fitting title to the concept of the work.
