   'DESIGNING FOR COMPLEXITY'

05/01/16 - 08/01/16

For this project the area of design I focused on was 'Experience Design'. My initial research began by exploring a number of literary sources, most notably: 'Seductive Interaction Design' by Stephen P. Anderson and 'Experience Design, technology for all the right reasons' by Marc Hassenzahl.

Following on from the reading, I quickly drew up some ideas for the design that would encompass the essentials of experience and interaction. Based on two key quotes, "Experience is a constant stream, a chunk of time, a story" and "interaction is about space and time, experience as a concept reflects upon this". With these sentences echoing in my head, this piece was developed. Using motion sensors that would also measure a persons proximity to the device, when motion is detected the mechanical arm would begin to rotate. The stick of chalk will record the duration of the experience, while creating an intrinsic interaction.

When the sensor detects motion, the arm within the dish begins to rotate. If the motion proximity to the sculpture increases the speed at which the arm rotates also increases. Natural curiosity of the sound I believe will draw a person towards the piece. The concept for the

concave shaped blackboard was inspired by old lecture theatre boards. This idea that there is a large important lesson to be learn't with in the piece.

Going forward I would like to develop a installation where there would be multples of these pieces in a spaces. The different spends of the arms depending on motion proximity will build and interesting sound effect.
